As
described in the Executive Solution Help File, the Accident Module is provided
both as a proactive and a reactive management tool.
Reactivity
is the action taken following an accident causing personal injury and lost time.
Such actions are:-
i. Identification of the injured person(s) WHO!
ii. Discovering the circumstances, including nature of injuries, surrounding the event WHAT! iii. Investigating how the accident occurred WHY! iv. Determining the time and place of the occurrence. WHERE & WHEN!
The
only way for these facts to emerge is for an investigation to be carried out,
usually by a person who's responsibility this is, a member of company management.
Pro-active
measures can only come into play following ALL of the above and the TRUE cause(s)
established. Once the cause has been discovered, it is essential that it is
controlled to ensure, as far as reasonably practicable, the same set of circumstances
cannot arise. This may be by removing a physical item such as a slippery or
uneven floor; replacing a defective machinery guard or collapsed conveyor idler
roller, or installing machinery guarding where non was in place (or a safety
barrier in the case of a fall). Another example of pro activity is the training,
re-training and education of operatives and supervisory staff where the investigation
reveals this to be the primary cause of the accident .
In
much the same way, all processes should be examined, where there is a possibility
that an employee could contact one of the listed Industrial Diseases (e.g. affecting
skin, lungs muscle, ligaments) with a view of putting controls in place before
an event can occur.

Analysing
accident data and selecting ' Blackspots ', can
also be seen as a form of pro-activity. By identifying those areas or persons
within the business, that are shown to be high risk and targeting them for improvement
measures will, more often than not, ensure fewer accidents and injuries, less
downtime and absenteeism, thereby reducing costs and increasing efficiency.
